If you've been following New York Fashion Week at all, or if you've even used the internet this month, you may have heard about Kanye Wests' sold out show at Madison Square Garden or Twitter's most talked about designer, Rihanna for Puma. And I have to admit, the hype is well deserved. Both of these shows stood out to me in a very real way as I browsed through collection after collection on Vogue's website.
Despite some strong opinions about these artists (particularly Kanye), I believe they truly defined NYFW go around with their heavy emphasis on minimalist urban streetwear. Streetwear has been making an appearance on the runway here and there for the last few years (Hood by Air, Alexander Wang, Public School, Rag & Bone), but this year the trend was reigned supreme.
For Yeezy, I think Season 3 represents Kanye's fully realized creative vision. The collection is consistent with his past showings- neutral, oversized, industrial, contrasting shapes, etc. This year, however, was Rihanna's first presentation at NYFW. Fenty x Puma perfectly encapsulates everything Rihanna- a little dark and a lot of sex. The monochrome collection brings us a unique mix of goth and athleticism. It's kind of like Nancy from The Craft goes to gym class in a post-apocalyptic forrest.
After finding myself so inspired by these collections, I decided to see if I could experiment with some items from Street Scene to create a couple of looks. I put together a women's look inspired by Rihanna's collection- complete with an oversized lace-up sweatshirt and a sleek black hooded dress underneath.
For my Yeezy inspired look, I employed the effortless layering, unexpected color blocking and a similar shearling-lined overcoat seen in Kanye's collection.
Below I've included some more pieces from the store that reminded me of these collections! What were some of your favorite shows from NYFW?
